When the lips feel dry, we often lick the lips to wet them. But, this method can worsen the condition of dry lips. For that, know how to moisturize the right lips.

Dry lips can be caused by various factors, such as weather, sunshine, and dry air. Lips are very often exposed to various factors from the environment, but do not have oil glands to protect them. In addition, drinking less water can also make lips dry. Given the many things that can cause dry lips, it is very important to understand the correct way to moisturize the lips.

How to Moisturize Your Lip

Some people think licking lips is the most practical way to help moisturize them. But in fact, after dry saliva, it will reduce moisture on the lips. As a result, the lips will dry up.

Here are some ways to moisturize the right lips:
  • Maintain adequate body fluids
The condition of the lips is dry and broken into one of your signs of lack of fluid in the body (dehydration). Expand drinking water at least 8 glasses per day. If necessary, use a humidifier to keep the humidity around, which will also affect the moisture of your lips.
  • Apply lip balm
When the lips dry, apply lip balm. Choose lip balm with emollient base ingredients, such as coconut oil and petroleum jelly. Moisturizing lips with this ingredient will help relieve dry lips and not cause irritation. However, you should avoid lip balm with flavor, because it will only make you lick your lips more often.
  • Choosing lip products with sunscreen
Using lip balm that contains sunscreen while outdoors can protect damage to the lips, by reducing the effects of ultraviolet light on the lips.
  • Do not bite or peel the skin on the lips
Exfoliating the smooth and thin lips can cause pain and bloody lips. In addition, it can also slow down the recovery process on the lips.
  • Changing breathing techniques
Not much is realized that breathing through the mouth can trigger dry lips. Replace breathing techniques by breathing through the nose, as a way to keep the lips moist.

Avoiding the Causes of Dry Lips

Dry lips are not only caused by weather, sunlight, and humidity. There are several other factors that can also cause lips to lose moisture quickly, such as:
  • Caffeine
Consumption of beverages containing caffeine can increase the risk of dry lips. Too much consumption of caffeine-containing drinks, such as coffee, tea, or chocolate, can make dry skin from inside.
  • O certain drugs
Taking certain drugs can also increase the risk of dry lips and cracked. Medications that can cause this condition include chemotherapy drugs, lithium (drugs for bipolar disorder), and vitamin A supplements.
  • Alcoholic beverages
Consumption of alcoholic beverages as well can cause lips to become dry and cracked. Consuming too much alcoholic beverages will interfere with the absorption of vitamins in the body, so your vitamin needs cannot be met.
In addition, watch out for dry lips as a sign of illness or health problems, such as infection or malnutrition. If the way to moisturize your lips at home doesn't solve the problem, you should immediately see a doctor.
