When it blinks, the gland on the eyelid will produce a little tear to moisturize your sense of sight and remove foreign objects from it. The production of tears becomes more when you yawn, laugh out loud, or cry. But, there are some people who may experience watery eyes continuously.

In addition to liquids that contain salt (tears), other glands on the eyelids also produce oil. This substance can prevent tears from evaporating too quickly.

Causes of Watery Eyes

Watery eyes can occur when glands that produce oil do not work properly. This makes the tears quickly evaporate and make them dry faster. This dry eyes stimulates excessive tear production which causes watery eyes. Watery eyes can also occur due to blockages in the tear ducts.

Watery eyes can also be caused by:
  • Weather factors or the environment around the eyes, such as smoke, wind, or light that is too bright.
  • Tired eyes.
  • There are foreign or irritant chemicals in the eyes.
  • Flu.
  • Allergy.
  • Eyelid inflammation.
  • Infection of one part of the eye as in conjunctivitis.
  • Eyelashes grow in or out.
  • Side effects of drugs.
  • Certain diseases, thyroid disorders, chronic sinusitis, tumors, and Bells palsy.
  • Side effects of radiation therapy.
Watery eyes are also age related. This condition is common in infants and those over the age of 60 years.

How to Overcome Watery Eyes

Mostly, watery eyes don't need special care because they can improve on their own. But sometimes, this condition can be a problem that interferes with activity and comfort so that it requires special handling.

Here are some ways to deal with watery eyes according to the cause:
  • Compressing the eyes with a warm wet towel for several times a day can overcome the blocked tear ducts.
  • You can use eye drops to handle dry eyes.
  • Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to treat watery eyes caused by conjunctivitis or eye infections.
  • If the cause allergies, taking antihistamine drugs can help overcome them.
  • Medical measures can be taken to treat ingrown eyelashes or remove foreign objects in the eye.
  • Your doctor may recommend an operation path if there is a blockage in your tear duct.
Watery eyes in babies are usually caused by blockage of the tear ducts. Usually a blockage of the tear ducts in a baby can improve on its own without special treatment.

But, you can speed healing by massaging the tear duct using a clean index finger. Do a gentle massage on the side of your baby's nose bone, near the corner in his eye. Aim the massage towards the nostrils. This massage can be done several times each day for several months.

But if conditions have not improved, the operation path may be an option.

Actually treatment may not be needed if the watery eyes do not interfere with your daily activities. However, immediately (consult) consult an ophthalmologist if you experience prolonged watery eyes accompanied by pain, red eyes, irritation, bleeding, bruising around the eyes, severe headaches, visual disturbances, or even makes you unable to see at all.
